Clark vs. Clark Michigan vs. Clark Hurth vs. Dana Clark...what's the difference?
Clark and Clark-Hurth are now owned by the Dana Corporation and manufactured as Dana Spicer. Clark Michigan is now owned by Volvo®. Here's a brief history of the Clark brand.
The original Clark Equipment Company: Clark Equipment Company was founded in 1916 and started building axle assemblies in 1917 by introducing the first practical design for an internal gear drive axle. In 1927, Clark started building transmissions. The transmission and axle divisions were later sold to the Dana Corporation.
Clark/Michigan: In 1953, Clark Equipment Company acquired Michigan, a manufacturer of lift trucks and cranes. This division became the Clark Construction Machinery Division and was bought by Volvo Construction Equipment, Inc., in 1995.
Clark Hurth: In 1990, Clark purchased Hurth Axle S.p.A., an Italian manufacturer and distributor of off-highway axles, and transformed it into Clark-Hurth Components. Before 1997, Clark-Hurth sold two-thirds of their axle assemblies internationally and had several manufacturing plants in Italy.
Dana Clark: The Dana Corporation acquired Clark and Clark-Hurth in 1995 and 1997 to form Dana Off-Highway, which later became Dana Spicer. This is sometimes known as Dana Clark.
